This is Ozell R. Pettit, 747th Sqdn., with Elmer the dog. There's a story behind Elmer: In the July 1999 Association Newsletter there's a letter from Mr. Moseley (Nelson B., 747th?) about smuggling Elmer in as a puppy early during activation in Stornara. This picture was taken in 1944, when Ozell was 23 years old. Ozell said Elmer liked to ride around in jeeps and artillery trucks, and especially liked the lack of a windshield on this jeep - and that sometimes Elmer even would ride on the hood! For another picture of Elmer, see Life Page 22.

And sometimes they got out to see the sights: The Howard Watkins crew at the Vatican. The fella in the 3/4 length coat is "Bam Bam" Bash, a bombardier (possibly 746th).

Dug out this picture and thought it might be a good one for the web site. The doctor, with the soft hat on was Doctor O'Dea (?) of the 745th Sqdn. The crew member was wounded on this mission and he is smiling, because he will be OK. I don't have an ID on him or his officer helping him, but they are all from the 745th.

A member of the 485th Bomb Group that had been based near Venosa, Italy, has provided some remarkable photos of life at that airfield and especially numerous photos of the folks in the local village. Follow this LINK to view these and more, and press "back" when done to return here.
